Napster Sells for $207M With Plans to Build a Music Metaverse

Napster, the brand that once symbolized music piracy, is getting a futuristic makeover. In a deal worth $207 million, artificial intelligence startup Infinite Reality has acquired Napster with plans to launch a music-centric metaverse, redefining how fans and artists connect in the digital age.

The move marks a dramatic pivot for the infamous platform, one that could position Napster at the forefront of Web3 music, NFTs, and immersive virtual experiences.

Announced on March 25, Infinite Reality’s acquisition signals more than just a rebranding. Napster is set to offer “branded 3D virtual spaces” designed for exclusive virtual concerts, social listening parties, and artist-led digital hangouts.

“Imagine stepping into a virtual venue, chatting with your favorite artist, and buying exclusive merch all in real-time,”

Napster CEO Jon Vlassopulos teased. He will continue leading Napster through this new chapter, describing the shift as part of the internet’s evolution into the “immersive era.”

AI, Analytics, and Monetization – The Bigger Vision

Beyond virtual events, Infinite Reality plans to equip Napster with AI-powered community management tools, analytics dashboards, and cross-platform integrations. Artists will gain insights into fan behavior, new ways to monetize content, and access to Infinite Reality’s wider entertainment ecosystem, including Esports teams.

“This is about shifting the internet from a flat, 2D experience to a 3D conversational one,” Infinite Reality CEO John Acunto explained. The acquisition is set to close in the coming weeks.

It’s a bold new chapter for a brand that’s already lived several lives. Launched in 1999 as a peer-to-peer file-sharing service, Napster quickly became synonymous with music piracy before being forced to shut down in 2001 after a flurry of copyright lawsuits.

In the decades since, Napster has bounced between owners, morphing into a legitimate streaming service. Its most recent backers, Algorand and Hivemind, pushed the platform into Web3, exploring blockchain-based music subscriptions and acquiring Web3 startup Mint Songs in 2023.

Now, Infinite Reality hopes to accelerate that trajectory, turning Napster into the leading immersive music platform where artists, fans, and curators meet in new digital spaces.

A Metaverse Bet as the Music Industry Evolves

Napster’s metaverse ambitions come as the music industry experiments with new digital frontiers from NFT album drops to virtual concerts in gaming worlds. Platforms like Roblox, Fortnite, and Decentraland have already hosted major music acts, proving that virtual spaces can pull massive audiences.

Napster’s strategy aims to merge music, Web3, and AI tools offering artists deeper control over fan engagement while unlocking new revenue streams.
